Dato’ Mohamad Bustaman Abdullah

Dato’ Mohamad Bustaman Abdullah received his commission from Sandhurst, the prestigious Royal Military Academy in England, and returned to serve the Malaysian Armed Forces for 15 years before diverting to legal practice more than 20 years ago, specializing in intellectual property, technology, sports, media and entertainment law.

He readily understands both the legal and commercial aspects of IP, technology, media, entertainment and sports law. Among his area of expertise includes; research collaboration and IP strategic agreements, IP audit and due diligence, IP licensing and technology transfer agreements, sports dispute and governance, sponsorship, endorsement, merchandising, franchising and broadcasting rights. As a senior counsel, he also attends to court proceedings in IP and sports litigation cases.

He formulated IP policies for research institutions, universities and companies including drafting the process and procedures for the IP Manuals and advised clients on IP management.

In sports law, he was responsible in the incorporation of Sukom Berhad and registration of the 1998 Commonwealth Games trade marks. He also advised on International Games Hosting Agreements. He currently sits as the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee for the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) and member of Disciplinary Board of the Malaysian Football Association (FAM).

With his vast experience as prosecutor, defence officer and member of court martials whilst in the military service, his roles at the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee comes in handy.

Bustaman also serves as a committee member to the IP Committee of Agency Inovasi Malaysia (AIM), a government agency responsible for the Malaysian innovation agenda.

Bustaman is a member of various IP NGOs such as the Asian Patent Attorney Association (APAA), Licensing Executive Society International (LESI), Federation of International Intellectual Property Counsels (FICPI), International Trade Marks Association (INTA) and the Australia New Zealand Sports Law Association (ANZSLA).
