Mr. Graham Scown
Programme & Commercialization Director, Return on Science
Graham is the Programme & Commercialisation Director for New Zealand’s Return On Science programme. Return on Science is a national research commercialisation programme, focused on bringing new research to market from universities, research institutions, and private companies by drawing together high quality resources from around the globe to assist in the commercialisation of research.

Graham has been working in, and on, the New Zealand innovation sector for the past 18 years. He began his journey by starting a technology company out of university, based on a final year theoretical project. After starting the company, and subsequently selling it, he was able to go back to his course lecturer and correct one of the lecturers assessments comments, which was "nice idea but it will never work commercially".

From that entrepreneurial start Graham went on to work with Fonterra, the New Zealand central government, and with the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Agency. In central government he was responsible for the newly created Commercialisation Team which sought to increase the quality and quantum of commercialisation opportunities from publicly funded research. As part of this he managed the PreSeed Accelerator Fund, a $10m p.a. early stage investment fund, and worked closely on the original national commercialisation collaboration initiative, now known as the Commercialisation Partner Network, which includes both KiwiNet and Return On Science.
